Portable Offices provides the solution to urgent need for 250,000 school places

Following last week’s announcement about the country’s desperate need for additional spaces to accommodate the growing number of primary school children, Portable Offices – one of the UK’s leading developers of modular buildings – has developed a full schools’ package designed to meet the demand.

With the UK experiencing the largest increase in demand for primary school places since the 1950’s, particularly in London, the Department of Education has increased the funding it provides to local authorities with a net increase of almost 81,500 places in the last two years with more than £5bn invested into new school places since 2010.

However, the National Audit Office has found that there are indications that this is still leaving a massive shortfall with many schools full or over capacity despite the extra 80,000 places created in the last two years.

It is estimated that in the next two years, 250,000 new places will be needed in primary schools – 37% in London alone.

Portable accommodation can provide an effective solution to the space crisis and Portable Offices has launched a turn-key solution which offers a speedy, flexible and cost-effective alternative to traditional building methods,  which can sometimes be expensive and disruptive.

Modular buildings have come a long way from the outdated pre-fab approach and can now even mirror a traditional brick-built or cedar clad façade with an enduring longevity and a high degree of ‘kerb appeal.’

Super eco credentials make portable buildings increasingly attractive in today’s environmentally- conscious culture. Pre-loved portable buildings can make an enormous difference to the capital expenditure of a project providing savings of around 40-50% on units without any compromise on reliability and with a full warranty on a hire or purchase basis.

Over the past 12 months, the number of education based solutions has increased and the need is growing as more schools look at ways of making their capital expenditure and budgets go further to accommodate these additional pupils.

Managing Director of Portable Offices, Adrian Witty, comments: “Nowadays, portable accommodation or modular buildings offer a turn-key solution to new build needs with fast turnarounds of just six to eight weeks in many cases. We have developed a schools package which includes planning approval, essential amenities and  ground works and warm, clean, bright state-of-the-art classrooms for a reasonable outlay.

“Having considerable experience in the education sector, we are ideally placed to provide the optimum solution to schools’ expansion needs.”
