A Modular Milestone:
Creating Space for the Future

As part of its ongoing commitment to inclusion and innovation, The John of Gaunt School in Trowbridge worked with the local authority to develop a dedicated resource base for students with higher and special educational needs.

To accommodate this important expansion, the school needed additional teaching space.

There are three things we look for in partners: price, someone who is honest and open, and someone who communicates well. Portable Offices delivered on all three.

A Smarter, Faster Way to Build

Working alongside the Equa Mead Learning Trust, to deliver a purpose-built 25-bay modular building – now known as the Naish Building, named in honour of a respected former staff member. The new facility includes:

11 modern classrooms (IT suites and mathematics rooms)

A staff breakout/office space

Dedicated IT office and comms room

External access to each classroom, plus a welcoming central corridor & reception

Building Around Learning – Delivered During Term Time

Despite being located at the heart of the school grounds, the project was delivered during term time with minimal disruption. A temporary access road, careful site management, and weekly communication with the school ensured safe, smooth progress throughout.

Powered by Innovation and Sustainability

The building incorporates 70 roof-mounted solar panels with internal battery storage – allowing the school to harness and store renewable energy, even feeding back into the grid. Combined with smart insulation and reduced onsite works, the modular approach aligned with the school’s aspirations for efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Building Partnerships, Not Just Buildings

This project was more than a construction milestone – it was a collaboration between organisations that share a common vision. At every stage, Portable Offices and The John of Gaunt School worked together with openness, care, and a shared belief in the power of well-designed spaces to support better learning outcomes.

As a headteacher, I was very concerned having it built [the Naish Building] during the academic year. Everything ran smoothly. I was really, really pleased.

Ben Rhodes, Head Teacher | The John of Gaunt School

Conclusion

It was a privilege to work alongside a school so committed to creating outstanding learning environments through modern methods of construction. Our teams shared the same goal – delivering a space that would have a lasting positive impact on both pupils and staff.
